Dalton with Newton Town Council

Minutes of the Annual Town Meeting held on Tuesday 3rd May 2016

In the Town Hall, Station Road, Dalton at 7pm

Present Councillors W Maddox, N Perie, D Greaves, A Bowe, D Gibson,

Before the meeting commenced, new councillor Mrs Elizabeth Colver signed the Declaration of the Acceptance of Office and joined the meeting.

1. Apologies for Absence Councillor A Thurlow

2. Mayors Report Councillor Maddox gave the Mayors Annual Report

As this has been my second time as Mayor of Dalton, I knew what was expected of me throughout the year.

My Mayoress Dot and I started the year with invitations to Civic Sundays – Barrow, Ulverston, Millom and Kendal, where we met Mayors we would be seeing throughout the year, and are affectionately known as the Chain Gang.

We have attended many events over the year, some big, some small, but we have enjoyed all of them and been made most welcome.

Some events stand out more than others, small events like attending Staveley House and talking to the residents, crowning Dalton Carnival Queen and attendants, and helping the Parkinsons Society rattle tins in Dalton Co-op, and many, many more. All very enjoyable to attend.

Highlights of the year included entering Cumbria-in-Bloom, and then hosting the presentation ceremony at Chequers Hotel in Dalton, when people from all the towns and villages in Cumbria attended to see if they had won an award. Chequers was packed with people from all over the County, and it was a pleasure for Dot and I to meet all the winners, and the event and venue was enjoyed by all present. Dalton received 3 trophies one of which was for Clarence House for the Tourism Award.

Dalton was also entered in the Britain-in-Bloom competition again in 2015, and the presentation ceremony was held in Sunderland. I attended with my husband and we met with hundreds of people from all over Great Britain and also Jersey. It was a brilliant night and Dalton received a silver award, of which we are very proud. It was an honour, for Dalton, to be asked to represent the County in the Town Award, for a second year. Dalton St. Marys School Deputy Headteacher Hannah Croskery was also awarded a discretionary award, this was chosen by the men who judged Dalton, and it was a total surprise to her and obviously she was delighted as we all were.

In March this year Dot and I attended the Love Barrow Awards, it was a very emotional night and was great to see Gill Tyson win the award for Courage in her fight against cancer. It was richly deserved.

Out last event was last Saturday night when Dot and I attended the Barrow Community Trust Ball, held at Abbey House, to raise funds for good causes in the Furness Community. A good night was had by all and the raffle and auction raised a good amount of money.

My main fundraiser was a concert held in St. Marys Church in December with the singing quartet Voce. The Church was full, and as it was held during the Christmas Tree Festival, the Church looked amazing with all the tree lights twinkling in the dark. A wonderful setting for a concert.

There have been two very sad events to attend in my Mayoral year, these were the two funerals for Councillor John Millar and Councillor Bill Bleasdale, both sitting Councillors, who we sadly lost during the past year and are missed by all.

Dot and I have had an amazing year and could not have done it without the help of the Town Clerk and the admin team, who did a lot of running around and all the paperwork. I thank my fellow Councillors for all their support and especially the Deputy Mayor Nick Perie who carried out events I was unable to attend. Thank you Nick. Lastly I must thank Dot for all her support during the past year, she has been an amazing Mayoress. Thank you Dot, now life can go back to normal.
