Position on Council
Hi everybody, my name is Wendy Maddox and I have been a Dalton Town Councillor for 14 years representing Beckside Ward. I had the honour of being elected Mayor of the town in 2002/2003. I was elected to Barrow Borough Council in 2004 as the Labour Councillor for Dalton South, a position I thoroughly enjoyed as I was representing the people, but unfortunately lost my seat in May 2008. I was re-elected onto Barrow Borough Council in 2010 and again in 2011, and after being Deputy Mayor of Barrow in 2011/2012 I was elected as Mayor in 2012. My Mayoress was my friend Dorothy Ashburner. It was an honour to be the Mayor of Barrow, especially as it was the Queens Jubilee year. Dot and I met the Queen and Prince Philip, Prince Andrew and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and many more wonderful people. It was a year Dot and I will never forget.
I was born in Barrow and moved to Dalton in 1973 when I married. I became active in the community when I became a founder member of the former Dalton Dolphins Swimming Club and Group Secretary of the 6th Duddon Scouts. My interest in Council work began in 1988 when I became Dalton Charter Secretary and Dalton Town Clerk, holding both positions until 1993 and 1995 respectively. I then joined the NHS working in administration until retiring in 2006. Since retiring I have taken on the position of Trustee Secretary of the Old Peoples Welfare Centre in Chapel Street, Dalton, and in 2013 became a Committee Member of Barrow Community Trust and a Trustee on the Billincote Trust. I enjoy being a Councillor, working for the good of the town and its people. My main priority is to see the streets of Dalton repaired to a high standard and be roadworthy, and, to maintain regular contact with Cumbria County Council to take action. I am passionate about Dalton, and I love living in Dalton, and I want to see Dalton get back the dignity it has lost.
